Warning Label Rules

This "Danger" sign uses graphics to issue warnings.


Product safety signs and labels highlight potential hazards resulting from exposure to corresponding products. According to the American National Standards Institute, these warnings should also state the consequences of ignoring them as well as their degree of seriousness. Additionally, they should indicate avoid the hazard. Attorneys John and Ultima Morgan add that such warnings should be highly visible. Their placement should be as close to source of the hazard as possible.


Danger


This signal word indicates that improper handling of a product will result in death or serious injury. Reserve this for the most serious situations. Write the signal word in white and place it on a red background.


Warning


This signal word indicates a hazard that could result in serious injury or death. Write the signal word in black and place it on an orange background. The difference between "Danger" and "Warning" signs lies in the likelihood of death or injury.


Caution


This signal word warns of a situation that is potentially hazardous. If you are careless, you may suffer minor or moderate injury. Write the word word must be in black and place it on a yellow background.


Below the Signal Word


The section below the signal word needs to include three things: a description of the hazard, the consequence of not avoiding it and instructions on stay safe. Add a graphic to the written description. A red circle with a slash placed over a graphic of the unsafe behavior illustrates avoid the hazard.
