Be A Retail Shoes Buyer

There are many careers in fashion and retail that can be successful and lucrative to a person with the right skills and training. One such career is that of a retail footwear buyer. To be a buyer, a person must have a specific skill set that comes naturally and can be developed through education and experience. A buyer may work for a department store, an upscale boutique or a wholesale distributor, or as a freelancer serving clients.

Instructions

1. Get a degree in fashion merchandising. This is not a total necessity, but greatly helps on the path to this career. A degree can help you get the training and knowledge needed, as well as develop contacts and even an internship.

2. Get much experience in footwear retail. Many department stores and shoe stores have commission-based positions that help develop the knowledge of what customers like. Get several years of experience doing this, as well as experience in sales management.

3. Have knowledge of customer buying behaviors. This can be somewhat learned in a classroom setting, but is much more highly developed by working in the field. This also may come naturally to some.

4. Keep on top of the footwear trends. This is a skill that comes naturally to many. It is greatly reflected in your own personal tastes, so dress for success always.

5. Have a flexible working attitude. Many buyers travel a lot, work odd and long hours, and must give into the whims of store managers and designers. Being flexible creates a good working relationship with all the people required to get the job done.

6. Be very organized. You must be good at planning and budgeting. You must be good at keeping track of inventory, as well as time management.
