SIM cards, formerly known as smart chips, are relatively inexpensive.
AT&T Wireless requires SIM cards -- previously called smart chips -- for a wireless device to work on their network. SIM card prices vary depending on your cell phone model.
New Activations
AT&T's new and upgraded devices are equipped with SIM cards at no additional charge. This includes AT&T's GoPhones.
Replacement SIM cards
Replacement SIM cards range in price from $5 to $25, as of 2010. Prices are based on the make and model of your wireless device. You must pay full price for replacement smart chips for any reason outside of warranty exchanges or insurance claims.
Warranty Exchanges
If your SIM card malfunctions during the first 30 days of service, AT&T replaces it at no charge. Within the first 12 months, certain circumstances, such as device problems that have fried the SIM card, result in a free replacement card.
Insurance Claims
Lost, stolen or damaged phones are covered by enrollment in AT&T's wireless insurance for a $50 to $125 deductible, as of 2010. This may include your SIM card and other accessories.
Purchasing Locations
Corporate and authorized dealer stores offer SIM cards for immediate purchase. SIM cards can also be ordered via the AT&T website. Prices vary at each location. Contact AT&T customer care at 800-331-0500 for warranty exchanges and insurance claims.
