Obtain A Liquor License In Maryland

Whether you are running a bar, a restaurant or a liquor store, one essential piece of paper can make or break your business. Liquor licenses allow you to sell liquor to your patrons, with certain legal obligations such as observing the legal drinking age. In the state of Maryland, you must undergo an extensive application process.


Instructions


1. Obtain and complete an application. You can obtain an application either on the state of Maryland website or by contacting the Liquor License Board. The various counties have different application procedures, so check with your county to get the most accurate information.


2. Post a notice in your establishment in a place that is clearly visible to the public. This notice must be posted for 10 consecutive days. This is to inform the public that you are applying for a license. The state of Maryland will likely send out an inspector to make sure you have completed this task.


3. Submit to an inquiry by the Liquor Licensing Board. These people are required to determine if you are fit to have the license. This could mean a background check and an inquiry into your finances and your business reputation. You will not be granted a license if the board feels you may abuse the privilege.


4. Prepare to defend your application against any locals who may protest your application. Certain communities are very sensitive to the types of businesses that function in their area. Be prepared in case you are called in for a protest hearing. Chances are you will not be called upon, but your presence may be required.


5. Fulfill all requirements to maintain your license. A lapsed license could cost you your livelihood, as well as additional fines. You will be informed of the requirements when you begin the application process. Make this your priority.
