The Astm Standard For Barbed Wire

ASTM International gives several standards for barbed wire as used for chain-link fencing. The standards differ depending on how the wire is made and the application of the barbed wire.

ASTM A121-07

ASTM standard A121-07 is the standard for barbed wire made of two strands linked together, common with chain-link fencing. The standard allows for barbs placed five or three inches apart. The coating types allowed are Type A (aluminum coated), Type Z (galvanized) and Type ZA (zinc coated).

ASTM F1665 - 08

ASTM F1665 - 08 covers PVC-coated barbed wire for chain link fences. There are three classes of barbed wire covered. Class 1 is PVC extruded over the wire. Class 2a is PVC extruded over and adhered to the wire. In class 2b the PVC is fused to the wire.

ASTM F1712 - 06

The standard ASTM F1712 - 06 covers high security applications of barbed wire for chain-link fencing, such as correctional facilities. The standard states that the barbed wire should be attached to the end posts with fabric or other appropriate fastening devices.
