Leaflet Ideas

There are many different ways to design leaflets.

People often use leaflets to advertise a business or service within a community. Leaflets are typically designed in two different styles---either letter-sized or trifold leaflets. These promotional pieces are great handouts at a business, at a local job fair or at a community event.

Theme

One of the first steps in designing a leaflet is deciding on a theme for the piece. Incorporate the theme of the leaflet in all aspects of its design, including artwork, text and images. A leaflet can discuss a variety of things, giving general information about the business, mentioning an upcoming holiday that features specials and sales, or taking a community-based approach to help local residents connect to the business on a new level.

Size

Make leaflets in a variety of sizes, ranging from a piece that will fit into a person's wallet to a poster-sized print. Analyze which size will be best for your desired distribution and also which size works best within the budget. For leaflets that you'll pass out to the general public, perhaps on the street or at a community event, small A7-sized leaflets are ideal. For leaflets that will be mailed to homes and businesses, sizes A5 and A6 tend to work best, as you can fit more information on the leaflet.

Copy

Leaflet copy must be clear, concise and easy to read. The average person spends just a few moments looking at a leaflet, so convey the message quickly and efficiently. Use short, five- or six-word headlines in bright or bold colors. Add small bits of copy to the leaflets for people who may be interested in more information. Include contact information in a prominent location so that those who want to know more can easily reach the right people.

Distribution

There are many different ways to distribute leaflets to the general public. The type of distribution you use will depend on the type of leaflet and the information being disseminated. You might pass leaflets out to people on the street, send leaflets through the mail, tuck leaflets under windshield wipers and stuff leaflets into magazines. In addition, you can post leaflets in public places or leave them at local businesses.
