New Jersey four-year insurance licenses phase out in 2011.
The New Jersey Department of Insurance made a change on January 31st, 2007, that affects all insurance licensees. Prior to that date licensees were issued a four- year insurance license. All licenses issued after that date are issued on a 2-year license renewal period. This change has affected how continuing education requirements are mandated.
Continuing Education Requirements for a four- year License
Four Years
The four-year insurance license will be phased out in 2011. However, those that still have the four-year license must follow the following continuing education guidelines. These licenses require 48 hours of approved continuing education classes and three of those hours must be from an approved ethics class. Many agents take these classes in the last year or break it up to 12 hours of continuing education per year.
Continuing Education Requirements for a two-year license
Two Years
A two-year license holder must complete 24 hours of continuing education classes and three of the hours must be from an approved ethics class. This license renewal category requires agents to take three hours of ethics every two years instead of every four years. A licensee must complete the continuing education courses prior to the license being renewed.
