Swiss bank accounts
are considered a safe, private option for banking.
Swiss banks are known for for their privacy and stability. Many people believe Swiss bank accounts are only for celebrities, millionaires and criminals. However, Swiss bank accounts are an obtainable financial option for most people.
Opening Accounts
Any person or company may open a Swiss bank account regardless of their location. Being based in the United States will not prevent the opening of a Swiss bank account. Many accounts can be opened through correspondence with the bank of your choice. However, Swiss bank accounts cannot be opened through online correspondence only. The bank is required to obtain a certified copy of documentation verifying your identity (i.e. passport, driver's license, identification card, etc.) The bank will also verify your address.
Anonymous Accounts
Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as an anonymous Swiss bank account. All Swiss banks are legally obligated to verify the identity of the account holder and any potential beneficiaries if you are depositing funds on behalf of another person. While fulfilling their obligations, the bank may also seek documentation regarding the origin of the funds being deposited. There is no real anonymity with Swiss banks.
Numbered Accounts
People often mistake numbered accounts for anonymous accounts. Numbered accounts are identified with an account number rather than a name. This provides internal security by limiting knowledge of the account holder's identity to a select group of employees. Customers opening a numbered account go through the same verification process as those opening regular accounts.
