Packet Sizes
The MTU setting controls the maximum Ethernet packet size your PC will send. Changing this setting can alter the packet size you computer can send, thus changing your upload and download sizes. This is especially useful when you have a broadband Internet service provider.
Instructions
Change the PPPoE MTU Size in Windows XP
1. Click "Start", then "Run', and type in "regedit" without quotation marks. This will run the registry editor.
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and then click "System," next click "CurrentControlSet" and then click "Services," then click "Ndiswan" and finally click "Parameters."
3. Click on the Edit menu and then go to "New" and then hit "Key."
4. Type in "Protocols" and then hit "Enter."
5. Click on the Edit menu and then go to "New" and then hit "Key."
6. Type "0" then hit "Enter."
7. Click on the Edit menu and then go to "New" and then hit "Dword Value."
8. Type "ProtocolType" and then press "Enter."
9. Click the Edit menu and then hit "Modify."
10. Type "800," then click "Okay."
11. Click on the Edit menu and then go to "New" and then hit "Dword Value."
12. Type "PPPProtocolType," and then hit "Enter."
13. Open the Edit menu, click "Modify" and then type in "21" and hit "Okay."
14. Click on the Edit menu and then go to "New" and then hit "Dword Value."
15. Type "ProtocolMTU," and then press "Enter."
16. Open the Edit menu, click "Modify" and then type in the "appropriate MTU size (decimal value)," and then click "OK."
17.Close the registry editor.
18. Restart the computer to make the changes effective.
