Check Up On The Status Of The Construction Contractor License

Contractors are required to be licensed on a state-by-state basis. Some cities or counties require additional licensing, or licensing in place of state licensure. A contractor's license ensures the consumer that a contractor is in good standing with respect to project completion, financial matters and other issues. Different types of contractors, for example a plumber or an electrician, require different types of licensing.

Instructions

1. Ask the contractor for a registered copy of a current and valid license. Search online to verify the license by entering the licensing organization and the license number.

2. Call the local municipal building department. Ask which type of contractors require licensing, and what the name of the general licensing organization is.

3. Inquire if there are complaints on record about a specific contractor at your local municipality. Check to see if the local building department has copies of contractor licenses on file.

4. Contact the references provided by the contractor. Ask previous clients of the contractor if they have a copy of a license.
