Discover Climate Conditions On Interstates

Interstate travel can be tricky if weather conditions worsen.

Interstate highway travel may be challenging in changing weather conditions. Snow, rain, ice and extreme heat can play a role in whether an interstate remains open and accessible to travelers. Weather conditions on roadways dictate whether delays can be expected and if travel is advised. You can find out if weather conditions are affecting interstate travel before getting in your car.

Instructions

1. Look up the number of the interstate or interstates you will be traveling on, and what states you will be driving through.

2. Contact the National Weather Service by phone or go to National Weather Service websites and enter the cities you will be driving through.

3. Go to the U.S. Department of Transportation website to locate nationwide traffic and road closure information. State-specific interstate closures can be found by accessing the website of each state's Department of Transportation.

4. Call 511, America's Traveler Information Number, for the status of interstate travel in and around your destinations.
