Donate Furniture
to Charity
When upgrading your furniture requires moving the old stuff out the back door, make a charitable donation. There are many different organizations who will gladly take your stuff but most of them have certain standards. Here's some information on how they work.
Instructions
1. Make sure that the furniture that you are donating does not have stains, major damage, or pet hair. Most places are particular about these things for health, allergy, and safety reasons. Clean it up as best you can and repair any small damage that you are able to.
2. Some Goodwill stores have an arrangement with local shelters. Items are donated to the store in the name of the agency and the agency receives credit for the donation. The residents of the shelter, who may be moving out on their own, are able to use vouchers to get things they need for their home. Check with your local Goodwill and Salvation army about their voucher programs.
3. Call shelters directly if you don't want to go the Goodwill route. The workers in these shelters whether homesless, domestic violence, or recovery center, will know which of their residents will be moving soon and what furniture they need. These places rarely have room to store furniture so it may have to stay with you until the resident can use it. Sometimes the workers in the shelter will pick up the furniture if they have the means.
4. If all other plans fail, donate to a church. Some churches have large donation centers where they keep furniture, appliances, and other household items. Anywhere you donate will appreciate your gift and will usually utilize it in some way.
