Import A Vehicle In To The U . s . States

Import a Car Into the United States

You need to take time to plan your importation of a vehicle into the United States. Be sure to follow all the guidelines set forth by U.S. Customs and complete all the required documentation. Knowing what you're expected to do before you try to ship a car can save you time and a lot of money.

Instructions

1. Get proper documentation for your car. You must provide U.S. Customs with all the paperwork associated with your vehicle, including the bill of sale and registration.

2. Clean the undercarriage of your car. The United States Department of Agriculture ensures that no pests arrive into the country through dirt left on imported vehicles.

3. Bring the car up to U.S. safety and environmental standards. You can hire a broker to ship your vehicle and make the necessary upgrades so that the car conforms before you claim it or attempt to sell it in the United States.

4. Pay a duty fee for your vehicle. Check with United States Customs for the current fees and exemptions for importing a car, truck or motorcycle.
