Search Texas Business Names

If you wish to start a business in the state of Texas, and the name of the business differs from your last name, or is a DBA name, then it must be registered with the Texas Secretary of State as well as the county where the business will be principally located. The Texas Secretary of State will allow multiple businesses to have the same name on file, however, the county clerk will require you to search business names in order to create a unique name for your business. A business name search must be done through the county clerk's office.

Instructions

1. Decide on a business name. Choose a name for your business that you think adequately describes the business, is unique, or is a name that people will remember.

2. Locate the county clerk for the county where the business will be principally located. Each county may have a different procedure for searching business names. Some searches can be conducted through the county clerk's website, and others must be done in person at the county clerk's office.

3. Conduct a search for business names. Search for the business name in all possible formulations of spelling and punctuation.
