3. Create an open source, or free version, of your software to prevent the theft or piracy of your product. Individuals are less inclined to steal material that they can acquire at no cost over the internet. Also, if your company offers an open source version of the software with less features, you can gain valuable insight as to what customer needs are based on the modifications made to the software.
